Bikes! They are great fun to drive and can cut your commute time in half.

But choosing one can be a bit tricky if you don’t understand what’s out there.

Whether you are a seasoned biker or you don’t even have a bike license, we have selected three motorcycles to suit your needs.

Ideal for… no bicycle license

Haven’t set aside the time it takes to get a motorcycle license yet? No worries, the Yamaha Tricity 300 has an unconventional three-wheel design – two at the front and one at the rear – which means it is considered a tricycle.

This has some huge benefits. Firstly, it won’t fall off when stationary, you can just keep your feet on the bike at the lights.

Second, you don’t need a bicycle license to drive one – if you’re over 21, your car license will do just fine. In theory, you don’t even need a helmet to mount one, although we highly recommend that you wear one.

Who can ride a motorcycle?

Obtaining a motorcycle license is not as easy as it is for cars. You can ride a 50cc moped from the age of 16, or a 50cc motorcycle from the age of 17, provided they have a top speed of no more than 30 mph, simply by obtaining a provisional license.

But to drive a moped or motorcycle with a displacement of up to 125 cc, you will need to complete your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), a one-day test.
CBT holders who are 19 years old can take a two-part practical test to get an A2 license, which allows you to ride bikes up to 47 hp.

Once you have obtained this license for two years, you can take another test to ride the bike of your choice.

If you are over 24, you should try the Direct Access Scheme (DAS) course. These can take four days. DAS courses take you through all the theory as well as the practical elements of riding a bicycle.

Ideal for … on the go

If you are traveling short distances, almost any motorcycle or moped will come in handy, but what if you live in a suburban town and need to get around the big city along a very busy highway? busy or fast A roads?

If so, you will need a comfortable bike to ride at high speeds. The BMW 1250 GS is an adventure bike designed to tackle almost any terrain, including the M1 in winter.

It has a comfortable sitting position, a high ride height that lets you see above traffic, a powerful engine, and good protection from the elements.

So you are really inexperienced on two wheels. In fact, you hardly know what you are doing. Don’t worry, there is still a motorcycle for you – meet the Honda Monkey.

Yes, it looks like a toy, or like a real bike has been shrunk in the wash, but this mini bike is super cool to look at and even more fun to ride.

Its small size and low weight make it very manoeuvrable and perfect for slipping through traffic gaps. It’s also incredibly efficient – the 125cc engine delivers a whopping 189 mpg, which means it’s probably cheaper to run than using a travel card.

What is adaptive cruise control?

Most new and many older cars have cruise control. It allows you to set a speed that your car will maintain without the accelerator pedal being pressed.

But freeway traffic slows down and speeds up so you can spend your endless commute adjusting and resetting cruise control.

However, Adaptive Cruise Control adapts your car’s speed to that of the vehicle in front of you. All you have to do is lead. The best systems can even slow the car to a stop if necessary, and then speed up when traffic begins to flow again.
