Biker killed in collision with SUV in Escondido

A biker on an all-terrain motorcycle was killed Thursday afternoon after rolling down a sidewalk in Escondido and being at an intersection where he collided with an SUV, police said.

The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. on Bear Valley Parkway in Hayden Drive, just south of Valley Parkway, Escondido Police Lt. Scott Walters said in a press release.

Police said the motorcyclist was riding a 2006 Yamaha YZ450F – an all-terrain motorcycle designed for off-road use that is not legal on the street – and was spinning north on the sidewalk along Bear Valley Parkway when he ran a red light at Hayden Drive.

The motorcyclist – whose identity police did not know on Thursday night – took to the street at the same time a 30-year-old woman from Escondido was turning left in a 2018 Lexus NX300 from Hayden Drive to Bear Valley Parkway, Walters said.

The rider crashed into the SUV and sustained serious injuries, according to Walters, who said a 911 caller reported that someone at the scene was performing CPR on the victim before authorities arrived. Paramedics took the injured man to Palomar Medical Center, where he died.

The accident did not injure the driver of the SUV.

Police Traffic Division Officer Pete McCollough is leading the crash investigation, and anyone who may have witnessed or had additional information about the collision has been urged to call McCollough at (760) 839-4930.
