Jesse Lingard sends message to Tahith Chong after successful loan debut

Tahith Chong had a successful loan start for Birmingham City this weekend.

The young Dutchman has praised Birmingham fans after being named man of the match for his impressive performance.

Manchester United will be delighted with Chong’s successful departure, after mixed loan spells for Werder Bremen and Club Brugge last season.

Chong played for 78 minutes as Birmingham beat Sheffield United 1-0 away.

His debut on loan caught the attention of United team-mate Jesse Lingard, who himself stayed in Birmingham in the 2013/14 season.

Lingard has texted Chong telling him he is in good hands with Birmingham backing.

Lingard scored four goals on his Birmingham loan debut in a 4-1 win over Sheffield on Wednesday. It was a spell that ignited his career at Manchester United.

Chong has lost a lot of momentum at United after a promising academy start, but there is clearly a very talented player out there whether he ends up at Old Trafford long term or not.

New role

Chong played as part of a three-way central midfielder, rather than as a winger. The role seemed to suit him.

Birmingham boss Lee Bowyer explained to the club website: “He’s a youngster, sometimes people ask young people who come from big clubs when they go down to Championship or League One.

“People are questioning their attitude but I have to say from day one he walked through the door he was excellent in possession and out of possession. I knew he would bring us something a little different.

“Again it was a bet because I asked him to play in midfield and if they dominated us in midfield Gardner was a little higher, Woods was lower so I had to make him Confidence on the defensive side and I’ve seen enough to make him be able to do that.

“When he’s done that run towards the end, 50 yards to follow someone, follow someone sprinting back to help the team – that will do for me. I am delighted with him.

Chong’s energetic play could be a good game for the Championship and he has a lot of experience playing in England for United academy sides.

He seems ready for this challenge and he made the first part, winning his new boss and his followers. Now all eyes will be on Chong to see if he can continue.
