Kawasaki’s value-focused KLX230 will arrive as a supermoto in 2023, namely the KLX230SM, with ABS, street rubber and priced at $7,494 for the Lime Green version plus road charges. Ebony-colored bikes command a $100 premium.

The KLX230SM uses 17-inch spoke wheels coated in 110/70 and 120/70 road rubber with bigger brakes than its predecessor. Compared to Kawasaki’s 150cc options, the 230 has wider rims, with a 3.00 front and 3.50 rear.

It’s a 300mm front and 220mm rear, with a dual-piston caliper and single-piston unit respectively. ABS is standard equipment, although it’s now a requirement on all Australian-registered bikes, so that’s no surprise.

The suspension has also been tweaked to suit more road-oriented needs, with 37mm forks and a new Uni Trak rear shock, with adjustable preload.

Stiffer springs and reduced travel are the result, with 204mm of front travel compared to 220 on the dual-sport KLX230, with the rear offering 168mm of travel, compared to 223mm on the dual-sport.

As a result, Kawasaki promises less brake dive on the forks, while the rear will obviously also be sportier.

On the performance front, we also see some small tweaks again, with the ECU settings increasing lower fast idle when warming up and revised settings for higher altitudes. The fuel injection map is also tweaked for colder weather, delivering better throttle response according to Kawasaki.

There are no huge engine updates or modifications

Power is 14 kW (19 bhp) at 5600 rpm, with 19.8 Nm of torque at 6100 rpm from the air-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke. Compression is a low 9.4:1 and displacement is 233cc. A six-speed gearbox mates with a wet multi-plate clutch.

A smaller rear sprocket was also used to match the smaller wheels, and the generator capacity was reduced, with the LED headlight having a much smaller requirement in comparison.

The footrests have also been replaced by footrests with rubber pads for better comfort.

Styling changes include the already mentioned LED headlight, which is compact, with a large sporty front fender, blacked out engine and blacked out frame, swingarm, bars and rims.

A range of accessories are also available, with a skid plate, hand covers, frame protectors, fat type handlebars, gold rims, helmet lock, rear rack and more.

The saddle height is 845mm, which isn’t bad for this style of bike, but still a bit tall compared to many LAMS machines. The weight is a very friendly 135 kg, with a fuel capacity of 7.5 litres.
