A Maui man was fatally injured in a motorcycle crash on North Kīhei Road early Tuesday morning.
Police have since identified the motorcyclist as Myles Basquez, 36, from Kīhei.
According to police reports, Basquez was riding a Honda 2000 Model CBR1000RR motorcycle and was heading northwest on North Kīhei Road when he collided with a 2007 Ford Sport Trac pickup truck.
Preliminary investigation reveals that the driver of the Ford was also heading northwest when he slowed down and attempted to make a legal left turn in the nearby dinghy area.
Police said the driver of the motorcycle, which was traveling at high speed, collided with the driver’s side of the Ford.
As a result of the collision, Basquez was thrown onto the roadway and died at the scene. The driver of the Ford, a 63-year-old man from Kīhei, suffered no injuries as a result of the crash.
The incident was reported at 5:56 a.m. on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 on North Kīhei Road approximately 0.1 mile SE of mile 3.
Police said the biker was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The driver of the Ford was wearing his seat belt, but the vehicle’s air bags did not inflate.
Speed ââis suspected to be a factor in the crash, police say. The involvement of alcohol and drugs has not been determined as the investigation is still ongoing.
It was the 12th road fatality in Maui County this year, up from six at the same time last year.
