PALA, Calif. – Sept. 3, 2022 – (Motor Sports NewsWire) – The 2022 MX Sports Pro Racing Scouting Moto Combine, presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare, came to an exciting conclusion at Fox Raceway in Southern California on Friday at the eve of the 12th and final round of the 50th anniversary Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing. A roster of 21 racers of top amateur talent opened the final rally of the summer and Slam Life Racing Honda’s Noah Viney seized the moment with one of the most dominating performances to date since the harvester’s inception. -thresher. A member of the group of riders coached by Chad Reed, Viney, who hails from Murrieta, took advantage of his local expertise and had a perfect day in which he posted the fastest practice lap, grabbed both moto holes and went wire-wire en route to a dominating 1-1 performance.
Fox Raceway’s on-track action was accompanied by classroom-style education sessions regarding training, fitness and nutrition, and the many layers of media engagement. Riders were also assigned to one of four esteemed coaches – Michael Byrne, Broc Glover, Reed and Broc Tickle – who provided mentorship throughout the day. High temperatures pushing into the triple digits saw event organizers implement safety protocols for competitors which shortened motos to 15 minutes plus two laps.
Viney entered the afternoon motos with the momentum of the best practice time and was on point when the gate dropped for the first time, leading the field out of the first corner with the holeshot, followed by Lux Carson City Motorsports KTM Turner. Viney dialed in on his Honda and was able to take an early lead thanks to a clear track. Behind him, Turner and Stan Benson Racing Kawasaki’s Alvin Hillan fought a battle for second place, from which Hillan moved up to second.
As Viney continued to add to his advantage, Hillan’s grip on second tightened halfway through the race. However, Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green’s Enzo Temmerman was on a torrid charge through the pack. The California rider started outside the top 10 in 13th place but overcame his mid-pack start with impressive moves that saw him pass several riders on each lap. Halfway through the moto, Temmerman had moved into the top five and closed in on Turner for third place. He made the pass and set his sights on Hillan. Hillan’s misfortune opened the door for Temmerman to move into second and also allowed Turner to take third.
Viney raced well away from the field for the majority of the race and took the checkered flag for victory in Moto 1 by a margin of 10.8 seconds over Temmerman, while Turner completed the top three. Hillan recovered to finish fourth, while Slam Life Racing Honda’s Evan Stice rounded out the top five.
As the gate fell on Moto 2, it was Viney again leading the pack as the peloton exited the first corner. Another holeshot opened the door for Viney to once again put some distance on his rivals in the early stages of the moto, but Temmerman got off to a much better start the second time around and was able to keep the Honda rider honest. The leading duo set a scorching pace in the opening laps which allowed them to put several seconds on the court and set the stage for a one-on-one battle for victory.
As the leaders drifted away, the battle for third place took shape between AEO Powersports KTM’s Dayton Briggs and EBR Performance Yamaha’s Julien Beaumer. They fought for a few laps before Beaumer moved and looked to assert his hold on the position.
Back in front, Temmerman continued to keep Viney within reach, but was unable to mount a serious enough challenge to put serious pressure on the lead. They traded momentum throughout the race and it looked like Temmerman had the pace to put on a run as the clock ticked down, but his push to mount a late challenge saw the Kawasaki rider suffer slight errors and a trained his slowest laps of the bike. It gave Viney the breathing room he needed to race to the finish and wrap up another moto victory by 2.7 seconds over Temmerman, with Beaumer in third.
Viney’s emphatic 1-1 moto sweep made him the third different winner of the 2022 Scouting Moto Combine. Temmerman also showed impressive speed with a 2-2 result that earned him second place overall , while SSR/Motul GASGAS’ Trevor Colip grabbed the final spot on the overall podium (6-4) despite missing the top three in each heat.
