Working on an electric scooter platform for the Indian market with localized parts: Yamaha

Yamaha will soon enter the EV segment in India with a product based on the Neo EV.

Even as great events have spread across the country with electric scooters, India has seen a steady increase in sales lately. The segment that started with a majority of new manufacturers is now also seeing an increase in established manufacturers. In the same breath, one such manufacturer that answered the question was Yamaha. During our recent interaction, YMIG spokesperson Eishin Chihana san shed some light on the company’s plans to launch its electric vehicle in India.

“To meet the growing demand in the e-scooter market, our engineers in India are working on an e-scooter platform for the Indian market, in coordination with the YMC team. Neo’s e-vehicle in Europe is the one of our best design contenders for this platform, but we need to rework the motor and battery specifications to suit Indian driving conditions. We are also looking closely at the market demand for electric scooters and conduct the necessary research to identify and understand the requirements of Indian customers Before launching electric vehicles in India, we will identify and use Indian suppliers for parts localization, even for items such as mechatronic systems, in order to achieve an affordable price for India,” says Eishin Chihana san.

Considering the Neo EV is quite a successful model for the company in Europe, we can only wait to see what effect Yamaha’s first EV will have in the Indian market.
