WorldSBK: Redding: Hard to beat a guy like Toprak, he rides flawlessly | Superbikes of the world

Scott Redding believes his on-track rival for much of the 2021 WorldSBK season, Toprak Razgatlioglu, was a class above ahead of next month’s season finale in Indoneisa.

The Yamaha rider holds a 30-point lead over six-time world champion Jonathan Rea, while Redding is 66 points with just 62 remaining.

Since round five in Assen, Redding and Razgatlioglu have been the top runners and both have more wins than Rea.

But while Redding had returned to the title race on several occasions – reduced an 80-point deficit to 40 at one point – Razgatlioglu’s consistency, as well as not making mistakes put him in the spotlight. position to win Yamaha’s first title since 2009.

Although he was irritated at times by Razgatlioglu’s aggressiveness this year, Redding had nothing but praise for the following Turkish driver San Juan (round 12): “He drives great; I can’t take anything away from him.

“With the pressure he has, he rides well; fast, strong, confident, no mistakes… it’s hard to beat a guy like that.

“Jonathan [Rea] can’t afford to finish second… finishing second is not what you should do when you have a guy who is consistently faster.

For years Yamaha had a solid motorcycle, but in need of further development – top speed and braking were the main issues.

However, with an improved top speed in 2021, comparable to that of Kawasaki and just behind Ducati, overthrown, Razgatlioglu arguably the best on brakes, Redding believes Razgatlioglu made up “a good percentage” of the new strengths of the car. R1.

“They had a good bike, but the rider was just missing a little something and a little something,” said Redding.

“I think Toprak [Razgatlioglu] made a good percentage, but they developed the bike around him, they fully believed in him, it made the other small percentage and now they have the full package.

“That’s why every other Yamaha has improved this year, but Toprak is a bit more.

“Yamaha’s weak point was speed and braking; Toprak corrects braking, Yamaha fixes speed, the rest goes hand in hand.”
